History

Balak Ram Medical School, named after Sir Ganga Ram’s son, was established in 1941 by Sir Ganga Ram’s family. The institution closed and the school structure was abandoned shortly after 1947’s declaration of independence. Professor Shujaat Ali, a medical expert, however, developed the idea of establishing a medical institution in the same location to train female doctors with the assistance of colleagues. For this reason, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was asked to accept the organization’s name, Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah, by Professor Shujaat Ali’s team. Quaid gave her permission to use her name. The first class of 39 students entered the Fatima Jinnah Women’s Medical College in Lahore in October 1948, and it was formally formed in March 1949 by the country’s then-prime minister.

Facilities

The institution’s library is furnished with all contemporary amenities that meet HEC requirements. So, all enrolled students are eligible for free library membership. Its 47,000-volume library includes textbooks and reference works on all areas of the health sciences. The library offers assistance with textbooks. A bookstore has been running 5,500 books for this reason for the past 16 years. Additionally, the library established a WHO research and reference area. There are 27,500 core medical journals on the collection list at the library’s journal division. We currently have a regular list of 37 domestic periodicals and 15 foreign journals. The library’s film collection covers close to 35 different health-related themes.

The library has around 130 CDs with medical books. Students can choose from 700 textbooks in the general book department. Plans are being made to connect the departments of universities and hospitals and create connections with worldwide institutions of higher learning. There is free internet access in the library.

The audiovisual department has eight multimedia systems and eight modern computers for lectures. The student housing complex is made up of seven blocks. Thus, the dormitory houses around a thousand students. A gym, a pool, and indoor and outdoor game areas are available. The university provides seven buses for day students.

Ganga Ram Hospital

The Punjab Council and Lahore’s main road are both nearby the Sir Gangaram Hospital, which is situated in the heart of the city. Therefore, it is the FJMU teaching hospital. A heavily inhabited area that serves the west and south of the city as well as the surrounding suburbs of Lahore surrounds the hospital. Although there are 700 beds in the hospital, there are often 800 admissions per day. The facility includes 314 trunk lines in its territory.

Admissions

250 students are so enrolled at Fatima Jinnah Medical University each year. However, the federal government reserves 50% of the seats, and students from Sindh, KPK, Balochistan, FATA, PATA, AJK, and northern regions are allowed to enroll. Therefore, as part of PTAP, 23 seats are set aside for friendly and Islamic nations (Pakistan Technical Assistance Program).

JCAT is also held by Fatima Jinnah Medical University (Joint Centralized Admission Test). Alumni from FJMU have a significant impact on North America. The FJMU alumni group in North America hosts annual gatherings and takes part in initiatives that support FJMC students, researchers, and faculty members. The philanthropist Sir Ganga Ram founded the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in 1921 on the walls of Lahore. He also donated some land. In 1943, the hospital relocated to its current site.
