The British Government of India established a Government College there in 1861. It began operations in 1864. With more than 12,000 students, it ranks among the top ten largest institutions in Pakistan since it was granted university status in 2002. It has five faculties made up of its 32 academic departments. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) awarded the university second place in the general category in 2013.

Lahore’s GC University BS Merit Lists Originally, the British Raj authorized the building of a Central College in Lahore in 1856, with instructors coming from Durham University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, and HC Dublin. The college, an associated college of the University of Calcutta, opened its doors on January 1st, 1864, in the Raja Dhyan Singh Haveli palace inside the Walled City of Lahore.

Former Campus


At the intersection of Lahore and Lower Mall in Downtown Lahore, The Mall is bordered by the principal commercial and administrative districts, educational institutions, and the former Panjab University campus. The primary structure was designed by W. Purdon and finished in 1877 for Rs. 320,000. A bell tower, standing 176′ tall in the middle of the main structure was constructed throughout the colonial period. The main structure’s wide verandahs and tall ceilings are examples of how the Neo-Gothic style is represented. Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner served as the institute’s first principal, and in 2019, the grounds were renamed “The Leitner Oval” in his honor.
