In Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, there is a public medical school called King Edward Medical University (KEMU). After King Edward VII, the university was established in 1860. Lahore Medical College was established and given its name by the British monarch. Students from the Lahore Medical School were given “identical rights offered to students in British schools” by the University of Dublin in 1868. The college joined Punjab Institution as an affiliate the same year, and the university added Lady Atchison Hospital as its second teaching hospital in 1887. As a result, the university became the only medical school in the province after Pakistan gained its independence, and in 2005 it was given legal status as a degree-granting institution. Since then, it has expanded and is now in charge of seven tertiary referral hospitals, among them Lady Wellington Hospital.
In a ranking of Pakistan’s higher education institutions released in 2015, HEC claimed fifth place. However, the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan placed KEMU as the sixth-best medical school in Pakistan.
Formerly known as the Lahore Medical School, the King Edward Medical School was founded in 1860. However, the Punjab Trauma Center was established at KEMU’s department of psychiatry following the 2014 shooting at the Peshawar Army Public School by the Prime Minister’s National Advisory Committee. However, the center seeks to organize training sessions on trauma, assemble and prepare teams of mental health specialists, and create educational materials.
